Jody S. Underwood has a background in education, computer science, and artificial intelligence, and specializes in the use of technology for learning and assessment. She has spent the last 25+ years doing research and development of intelligent tutoring systems, e-learning environments, embedded assessment design in games and simulations, and effective feedback. Dr. Underwood received her B.S. in Computer Science from Hofstra University in 1981, her M.S. in Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence from Rutgers University in 1987, and her Ph.D. in Science & Technology Education with a specialization in Cognitive Science from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 1998. Between her two advanced degrees, she did research and development of intelligent tutoring systems at Carnegie Mellon University and of AI applications at NASA Ames Research Center. Since receiving her doctorate, Dr. Underwood has done R&D at Vanderbilt University’s Learning Technology Center (post-doc), the Math Forum (a renowned online mathematics education portal, now based at NCTM), Educational Testing Service, and Pragmatic Solutions. At Intelligent Automation, she is lead designer and IAI project manager for the SimScientist Games project as a sub to WestEd, is lead designer for implementation of science simulation tasks and virtual worlds for the National Assessment of Academic Progress (NAEP) assessment as a sub to ETS, and designs instructional and assessment components for various digital and mobile projects.
